One of the best ways to experience vestiges of the Gurung Villages in Nepal.
Nepal is changing fast. That means travelers who are out to capture the ‘Spirit’ of the country should get moving quickly.
One of the best ways to experience vestiges of the Nepal of yore on the threshold of a Nepal striving to close the gap is to enrich the conventional trekking holiday with a few days of hiking on the outskirts of the beaten tracks of Khumbu, Annapurna or Langtang on a so-called „homestay“ basis. This entails walking between villages which still maintain their old-age traditions. You stay on a paying guest basis with families, thus sharing their way of life, partaking of their hospitality and getting an intimate view of traditional family structures and their specific cultures in a way that is impossible during a conventional trek where one stays in the usual lodges, making the usual conversation with fellow travelers having virtually no opportunity of getting to know age-old tribes like the Gurungs who hold high their traditional village life, which is reflected in the intimate way the houses are built in terraces with open yards running into each other and skills like basket weaving, weaving and wood-carving.
Incidentally, such villages provide ample opportunity for young tourists who would like to volunteer for a week or so of their Nepal holiday helping out – with practical aid,e.g. renovating run-down premises. The reward is a unique insight into the resourcefulness and idealism of the local educators working indefatigably on a very slight budget with no paid holiday leave.
In addition to these invaluable experiences Sikles and neighboring villages provide spectacular views of the Lamjung Himal-Annapurna II and IV range – maybe with a glimpse of Manaslu to the East and perhaps the somewhat unsettling experience of seeing (and hearing) an avalanche racing down the opposite mountainside.
Gurung village trek is perhaps the best introductory trek for trekkers. Planning for easy trekking in the Annapurna area staying at lodges each night. Nepal’s best-known ethnic community, the Gurungs, dominates this area. This trek will take you through terraced hillsides, dense moss-laden rhododendron forests, all set against a picturesque backdrop of the snow-capped Annapurna, is one of the most well known short treks in Nepal. This trek is best also as a family trek even younger children can enjoy.
The Annapurna himal and Gurung villages are the most celebrated treks. This exciting trip offers the chance to discover the areas on moderately graded holiday, with excellent and renowned full-service tea house trekking experience.
